Visual China Group Buys Corbis Images – Getty to Distribute Outside China

Visual China Group Buys Corbis ImagesOn January 22, 2016 Corbis and Visual China Group (VCG) announced that Unity Glory International Ltd., an affiliate of VCG owned by VCG’s major shareholders, has acquired the assets and brands of Corbis’ Images division. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Under the terms of their agreement with Corbis, VCG will own and manage the names and trademarks associated with the Corbis Images, Corbis Motion and Veer licensing brands, and will be responsible for the licensing of all images associated with these brands in China and around the world.

On the same day, Getty Images and Visual China Group announced a global distribution partnership. The existing Getty Images collection will expand to include Corbis creative stills, Corbis Motion content, and Corbis archival and documentary content, including the Bettmann and Sygma archives. This content will be available to customers in China via the VCG platform, vcg.com, and to the rest of the world via Getty Images’ global sales teams and website, gettyimages.com. Getty Images will create specific collections to house this new content.

VCG and Getty Images will immediately begin work to migrate Corbis content. In the interim, Corbis customers will continue to access this content in the usual way via the Corbis websites and sales team.


Visual China Group has been marketing and distributing Getty Images’ content exclusively in China for over a decade. Founded in 2000, VCG was the first company in China to license image and distribute copyrights through propriety online platforms, and has grown into a well-recognized player in the industry. In 2014, VCG was listed on the main board of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (000681.SZ). The Group has over 600 employees, with subsidiaries in major cities in Greater China including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
