Two hour tour of the current exhibitions
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles has granted the American Society of Picture Professionals West Chapter members access to their photo collections and archives. Saturday, January 9, 2016, we will be given a 2 hour photo tour of their current exhibitions, and behind the scenes access into their collections department.
The goal of the Seaver Center for Western History Research is to collect, preserve, and make available to the general public research materials documenting the history of the Trans-Mississippi West, with a special emphasis on Southern California and Los Angeles history. Materials in this department include manuscripts, books, serials, pamphlets, broadsides, maps, posters, prints, and photographs are all a part of this collection.
The Seaver Center is located on the Ground Floor of the Natural History Museum. Here is the web link to the Seaver Center: http://www.nhm.org/site/research-collections/seaver-center Go to ‘View the Collections’ and then select ‘View the Guide of the Photograph Collections’ you’ll see a description of each photo collection. The NHM staff plan on giving the group a general tour of the photo collections but would like to know what collections that particularly interests us. This is your chance to make a request to the ASPP West Chapter board of the collections you would like to be shown and hope you would email your choices to email@example.com if you plan on attending this event.
There are approximately 275 photograph collections. The photographic holdings comprise more than 300,000 images recorded on different photographic media, such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, glass and cellulose negatives, and a variety of paper prints.
After the Tour
Afterwards, we will go down the street to The Lab Gastropub, 3500 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles to raise a pint to Michael Masterson who was presented the 2015 Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year award. Michael was the National President of the American Society of Picture Professionals from 2010-2013 and West Chapter President from 2007-2009.
