Progress Report from Creative America

UnitedAgainstContentTheft

Tim Fraser, Organizing Director of Creative America sends ASPP this update:

Dear ASPP Members,

As you know, standing up for creativity and preventing online content theft is critically important to people like you who make a living in and care about the creative industries.

It's important to recognize that our effort to protect creators and makers—actors, directors, camera operators, set designers, makeup artists, and many more—has seen a lot of progress in the last year.

  • Internet service providers are now participating in a voluntary program to alert subscribers when it appears that illegal downloading has occurred on their accounts.
  • Google has changed its search rankings so that rogue sites don't appear in the top of search results, and many of these sites have been removed.
  • The debate about whether or not piracy is harmful is now a settled matter. In August, Carnegie Mellon University published a review of the empirical literature on piracy's impact on media sales and concluded that "the vast majority of the literature (particularly the literature published in top peer reviewed journals) finds evidence that piracy harms media sales."
  • USC Annenberg's Innovation Lab is shedding light on how advertisements for many big name brands end up on websites dedicated to copyright infringement, and some brands have already requested that ad networks remove their ads from these websites.
  • Major credit card companies and major advertisers both agreed on best practices to reduce sales and advertising on websites that sell pirated and counterfeit goods.
  • In November, 125 musicians came together to stand up for fair compensation for artists on Internet radio platforms.
Even with these positive steps, there is still much more work to be done. Hard working creative professionals continue to see their work stolen every minute of every day.

Thank you for joining with your colleagues and standing up for hard work and creativity. We look forward to more success in 2013.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Happy New Year!

Looking back on the past year, I was amazed and pleased at the number and diversity of events hosted and sponsored by ASPP chapters nationwide. In addition to chapter events and parties, we revamped our beloved magazine, The Picture Professional, added more member benefits, boosted membership, gave Find-a-Pro a facelift, launched a graduate membership gift program, created a Board of Trustees, updated our chapter handbook and worked with other trade groups on issues of mutual concern including orphan works and the Google books settlement.

Our Marketing Communications chair, Jennifer Davis Heffner, has turned her considerable talents into creating a video that summarizes the ASPP in 2012. Take a few moments to watch this extraordinary and entertaining look at our accomplishments. We couldn't have done it without you!

January 2013 News from National

NEWS FROM NATIONALJainLemos-ASPP4

—Jain Lemos, ASPP Executive Director

Happy 2013! We're fifteen days in and yet it feels as though the year is zooming by. That's because the National Board has been busy working on a new development I'm pleased to be announcing this month.

The Picture Professional magazine is self sustaining. Ads in each edition cover all the writing, design, printing and distribution costs. However, our online presence is not self-sustaining. In a bid to make it so, the Board decided during its December meeting to accept advertising onto the aspp.com website beginning in 2013.

Soon then, you will begin seeing ad banners at the top of every page and in the sidebar areas on the national blog and chapter pages. The Board expects that by the end of 2013, ads in 10 or 12 positions will offset nearly 70 percent of our total yearly web-related costs. This new revenue source will also be used for our site's complete redesign, which is launching this year!

Artist Willoughby Sharp handles a print of a nude. Photograph, c1970. Full credit: Kenneth Van Sickle / The Granger Collection. The spontaneous and poignant images of New York fine-art photographer Kenneth Van Sickle are now available at The Granger Collection. Van Sickle is known for literally shooting from the hip, a technique that captured palpable moments of perception. His subject matter includes Bohemian life in Paris during the 1950s and intimite dialogues with celebrated poets and artists in later decades.

Van Sickle's career spans 60 years of working in various styles—from candid black-and-white narratives evoking the mutability of life to experimental approaches in his later series, which explored the artist's subconscious involvement during digital manipulation. His lifelong fascination with visual phenomena has earned him shows at major galleries in Berlin, New York, and Paris, and at The George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

In 1960, Van Sickle's work was exhibited in the "Photography in the Fine Arts" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and is included in its permanent collection. His photographs are also in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, purchased and donated by Edward Steichen.

"Ken's photographs are spellbinding," says Lila Dlaboha, Managing Director of The Granger Collection. "Both his vintage work and later experimental photography satisfy the growing trends for imagery from the 1950s and 1960s. The plush color palette of his scenics, for instance, are perfectly suitable for a gamut of creative uses."

More vintage and contemporary photographs by Kenneth Van Sickle will be added to the online collection periodically. The images are now available at www.granger.com; a curated selection may be viewed by clicking here.
