How has the legal landscape for photographers changed with the emergence of Internet photo sharing? How do you protect your images while still “getting your work out there?”

About Our Speaker: Christopher S. Reed is a lawyer and a photographer based in Los Angeles. On the legal front, Chris specializes in copyright and entertainment law; photographically, he focuses largely on landscape and travel photography. Most recently, Chris served as senior adviser for policy and special projects at the U.S. Copyright Office. In that capacity he advised the Register of Copyrights on a variety of issues relating to copyright law and policy, technology, and the Office’s registration and recordation systems. Prior to his work at the Copyright Office, Chris served as and attorney in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he worked principally on matters relating to the media and entertainment industries. He received his B.S. in economics from Lehigh University, a law degree and an LL.M. in intellectual property from the University of New Hampshire School of Law where he also served as editor-in-chief of IDEA: The Intellectual Property Law Review, and where he serves as an adjunct professor teaching an advanced copyright policy course. After graduation, Chris served as a law clerk to the Honorable Steven J. McAuliffe, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire. Chris is a member of a number of legal and photography associations, including the Copyright Society of the United States and the American Society of Media Photographers. He serves on ASPP’s Board of Trustees.
Chris recently published an authoritative book titled Copyright Workflow for Photographers, which provides thorough how-to copyright registration instructions–including electronic registrations. Here’s where to find out more about the book, and, where to order the book right now.
